The Funniest Bug-Themed Costume for GroupsWant a costume idea that guarantees attention? A swarm of flies huddling around a comically oversized poop prop is as bold as it gets.

All you need are giant cardboard eyes glued onto headbands, wire-framed wings made from mesh or sheer fabric, and black clothing to pull the insect look together.

Add a few straws or sticks to act as fly tongues, and you’re ready to gross people out in the funniest way possible.

The large poop prop can be shaped from foam, fabric stuffing, or even brown-painted paper mache.

Materials Needed

  • 6 pairs of black outfits (long sleeves + pants)
  • 6 headbands + 12 foam boards (12″ x 12″)
  • Black markers or felt for eye details
  • 6 sets of wings (wire hangers + white mesh/netting, approx. 20” x 30” each)
  • Hot glue gun and tape
  • Colored straws (12-15 pieces)
  • Large foam, fabric, or paper mache prop shaped like poop (about 2 ft diameter)
  • Brown paint and green base for effect

Step-by-step Guide

Step 1: Create the oversized eyes by cutting circles out of foam board, drawing large pupils, and attaching them to headbands.

Step 2: Bend wire hangers into oval shapes, stretch mesh/netting over them, and glue the edges to form insect wings.

Step 3: Attach the wings to the back of each black shirt using safety pins or fabric straps.

Step 4: Assemble the poop prop using foam stuffing or paper mache layered into swirled shapes. Then paint it brown and place it on a green base.

Step 5: Hand out colorful straws for each person to “feed” with, and gather around the prop for the full buzzing effect.

Note:

This works best for groups of 4-8, but you can scale the size of the poop to fit however many flies join the swarm!
