Create a Radiant Woven Circle from Scrap Yarn and CardboardThis circular weaving craft brings together simplicity and joy.

With just a piece of cardboard and a few strands of yarn, you can design a vibrant mandala-like pattern that glows with texture.

It’s a project that slows you down and invites creativity, each row adds a new rhythm, a new layer of beauty.

Try mixing contrasting colors for a bold look or stick to a soothing palette for something soft and calming.

Materials Needed

  • 1 piece of thick cardboard (about 7-8 inches in diameter)
  • Assorted yarn (3-5 colors, medium-weight)
  • Scissors
  • Pencil and ruler
  • Tapestry needle (optional but helpful)
  • Small piece of tape

Step-by-step Guide

Step 1: Cut a circle out of your cardboard using scissors.

You mark 16 evenly spaced notches around the edge (or any even number for symmetry) and make small cuts about ½ inch deep.

Step 2: Take your first yarn color and tape one end to the back center of the cardboard.

Stretch the yarn across the circle, fitting it into one notch, then cross to the opposite side and loop into the corresponding notch.

Continue this crisscross pattern until all notches are filled, forming a spoked wheel. Then tie off the end at the back.

Step 3: Thread a new yarn color through your needle (or just use your fingers) and start weaving under and over the spokes, working in a spiral from the center outward.

You should alternate your weaving direction every few rows to create a balanced pattern.

Step 4: Switch yarn colors whenever you like by simply tying the ends together and trimming the excess.

Continue weaving until you reach the edges, adjusting tension so the design stays flat.

Step 5: Once finished, gently remove the yarn from the notches. Secure the loose ends at the back with tape or a knot.

Tips:

Try blending gradient yarn for a sunset effect or metallic threads for a festive shimmer.

If you’re making this with kids, use thicker yarn and fewer spokes for easier weaving.
