Who knew checking the mail could be this much fun? These Minion-inspired propane tanks bring out pure joy in the front yard.
With their bright yellow paint, silly goggles, and overalls, they hold up the mailbox as if it’s part of their daily mischief.
Kids adore it, neighbors smile every time they pass, and suddenly, mail delivery feels like a mini movie scene.
Materials Needed
- 2 empty propane tanks (standard 20 lb size, cleaned and vented)
- 1 standard mailbox (USPS-approved, metal or plastic)
- Spray paint: bright yellow, blue, black, silver, white, and red (12 oz cans each)
- Metal washers or round lids
- Clear epoxy or strong adhesive
- Metal rods or pipes (10-12” long)
- Small metal sheets or bolts
- Paintbrushes (small)
- Outdoor sealant spray
Step-by-step Guide
Step 1: Make sure both propane tanks are completely empty, cleaned, and safe to use. Then sand them down to remove rust and give paint a smooth surface.
Step 2: Spray both tanks with bright yellow paint as your base coat. Once dry, mask off the lower halves and paint the overalls in blue. You can also add small black details for straps and shoes.
Step 3: Create the eyes by attaching metal washers or lids to the tank with epoxy. Paint the centers white and add pupils with black paint for that signature Minion look.
Step 4: Attach metal rods to the sides of the tanks for arms.
Now position them upward to look like the Minions are holding the mailbox together. Then add small metal plates at the base for shoes.
Step 5: Secure the first tank to the ground with concrete or heavy bolts. Stack the second tank on top, welding or bolting it securely. Next, place the mailbox on top and fix it tightly in place.
Step 6: Add final details: black gloves, silly smiles, and any unique features you want to give your Minions character. Finish with a coat of outdoor sealant to keep colors fresh.
Tips: The key to making your Minions shine is in the details such as the goggles, the smiles, and the playful stance. Don’t be afraid to exaggerate expressions or add quirky touches.
