This project takes forgotten propane tanks and transforms them into durable, industrial-style urinals. Their curved steel bodies, once used for fuel, now carry a different kind of flow.
Paired with simple PVC piping, they create a sustainable and cost-effective restroom solution.
Perfect for outdoor venues, rustic bars, or themed rest stops, these tank urinals are proof that practical design doesn’t have to sacrifice creativity. They blend functionality with an edge of raw, reclaimed character.
Materials Needed
- 1 empty propane tank (standard 20-30 lb, safely purged and cleaned)
- Angle grinder with cutting disc
- Protective gloves, goggles, and mask
- Sandpaper or wire brush
- PVC pipe fittings (1”-1.5” diameter, depending on setup)
- Pipe clamps and brackets
- Sealant (silicone or epoxy)
- Optional: paint or clear coat
Step-by-step Guide
Step 1: Purge and clean your propane tank thoroughly. Remove the valve and rinse with soapy water, repeating until there’s no odor left. Safety is key.
Step 2: Mark and cut out a large front opening using an angle grinder. This creates the urinal’s access space. Smooth sharp edges with a grinder or sandpaper.
Step 3: Sand off rust and prep the surface. You can leave it raw for a rustic finish or paint it with enamel spray for a cleaner look.
Step 4: Attach PVC piping to the bottom opening of the tank. Then use clamps and sealant to secure a watertight fit. Connect this pipe to your main drainage line.
Step 5: Install a water inlet at the top if you want flushing capability. A simple PVC elbow joint connected to a water line works well.
Step 6: Mount the tank on the wall using sturdy brackets. Make sure it’s at a comfortable height and fully stable before use.
Step 7: Test the drainage and flushing system. You can also adjust connections and seal joints if there are leaks.
Tips:
Leaving the exterior slightly rustic can actually enhance the look, especially in outdoor spaces where the natural weathering tells its own story.
If you’re placing them in a bar or café, adding some humor with signage makes the whole setup even more memorable.
