If you love the idea of handmade ornaments that double as natural air fresheners, this project will be a favorite.
Imagine the glow of your Christmas tree lights bouncing off a circle of dried orange while cinnamon sticks radiate outward like sunbeams.
The bay leaves add a touch of earthy green, turning this simple ornament into a tiny holiday wreath with scents that carry memories of winter evenings, spiced tea, and festive gatherings.
Materials Needed
- 6-8 cinnamon sticks (each about 4 inches long)
- 1 dried orange slice (2.5-3 inches in diameter)
- 6-8 dried bay leaves (each about 3-4 inches long)
- 2 wooden beads (0.75-1 inch in diameter)
- Jute twine (12-15 inches)
- Hot glue gun and glue sticks
- Scissors
Step-by-step Guide
Step 1: Cut a piece of jute twine about 12 inches long and thread one wooden bead through it.
Then tie a knot at the end so the bead stays in place, leaving a loop for hanging.
Step 2: Lay your cinnamon sticks out in a starburst pattern, overlapping slightly at the center.
Next, you use a small dab of hot glue to secure them together.
Step 3: Once the cinnamon base is secure, tuck the bay leaves between the sticks.
Space them evenly so they look like green rays peeking out. You can also use a little glue on the stem end of each leaf to hold them.
Step 4: Glue the dried orange slice right in the center, covering the joined ends of the cinnamon sticks and leaf stems. Press firmly for a few seconds so it sets.
Step 5: Thread the other bead onto the hanging twine end (optional, for balance), and secure with a knot.
Step 6: Hang your ornament on the tree, where it will spread both beauty and fragrance.
Tip:
If you want the scent to last longer, refresh the cinnamon sticks and orange slice with a drop of clove or orange essential oil before hanging.
