Sometimes art doesn’t just decorate, it entertains. This propane tank makeover turns scrap metal into a whimsical plant monster with sharp white teeth, a bold red mouth, and a green leafy body.
It’s the kind of sculpture that instantly draws attention, making your yard feel like a stage set.
Materials Needed
- 1 small propane tank (empty and cleaned, approx. 10-20 lb)
- 1 steel pole or rebar (4-5 ft tall, for stem)
- 1 sturdy metal base (repurposed coffee can or steel bucket with concrete)
- Scrap sheet metal (about 12″ × 12″)
- Angle grinder with cutting and grinding discs
- Welding machine and rods
- Heat-resistant spray paint: green, red, white, black
- Protective gear: gloves, welding mask, goggles
Step-by-step Guide
Step 1: Start by making sure your propane tank is completely empty and safe to cut. You remove the valve and rinse it out thoroughly.
Step 2: Mark the front opening of the mouth. Use an angle grinder to cut a wide bite shape and smooth the edges.
Step 3: Weld on triangular teeth cut from sheet metal, spacing them evenly inside the mouth. You can also add a curved metal tongue for personality.
Step 4: Weld your propane tank head to the top of a steel pole. Then insert the pole into a weighted base like a bucket filled with concrete for stability.
Step 5: Cut and weld leaf shapes to the pole, angling them outward like a real plant. For extra detail, add curled wire vines.
Step 6: Spray-paint the plant head green with a red interior. Next, paint the teeth white, tongue red, and leaves green.
Step 7: Let the paint cure fully before displaying it outside.
