Picture a winter’s evening, the kitchen warm with the scent of citrus, and trays of oranges slowly drying in the oven.
These little stars, once strung together, create a garland that feels straight out of a countryside Christmas tale.
Each piece carries with it the memory of preparation, the quiet joy of crafting, and the glow of something handmade.
When you hang this garland, you’re not just decorating, you’re weaving a piece of the season’s coziness into every corner of your home.
Materials Needed
- 4-5 large oranges (yields around 35-40 star slices)
- Star-shaped cookie cutter (1.5”-2” size)
- Baking sheet and parchment paper
- Large needle
- Cotton string or twine (6-8 feet)
- Optional: whole cloves or cinnamon sticks
Step-by-step Guide
Step 1: Preheat your oven to 200°F (90°C). Slice oranges into ¼-inch thick rounds, then cut star shapes from each slice using your cookie cutter.
Step 2: Place stars on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for 3-4 hours, flipping halfway through, until they’re fully dried. Leave to cool.
Step 3: Thread your needle with twine and carefully string the orange stars one by one, spacing them about 2″ apart.
Step 4: Knot the twine after every few stars to keep them from sliding.
Step 5: Once you’ve reached your desired length, tie loops at both ends for hanging.
Tips:
Add sprigs of rosemary or cinnamon sticks between stars for a layered rustic look.
If you want a stronger fragrance, tuck a few whole cloves into the orange slices before baking.
