How to Turn Yogurt Jars into Chic Macramé Hanging Planters

Think of this as giving your plant a hammock. The macramé knots cradle the little jar, suspending it in mid-air like a piece of floating art.

In addition, light filters through the glass and leaves, creating quiet patterns across the room.

It’s not just a planter, it’s a gentle reminder of balance, simplicity, and the beauty of handmade design.

Materials Needed

  • 1 yogurt jar (5 oz, cleaned and label removed)
  • 2-3 yards of cotton macramé cord (about 3-4mm thickness)
  • 1 metal or wooden ring (1.5”-2” diameter)
  • 1 small plant or faux greenery
  • Sharp scissors
  • Optional: hook stand or ceiling hook

Step-by-step Guide

Step 1: Clean your yogurt jar thoroughly and dry it. If you prefer, sand the rim for a smooth finish.

Step 2: Cut your macramé cord into 4 equal lengths (about 24” each). Then tie them together with a knot at one end, leaving a loop for hanging.

Step 3: Attach the knot to a ring or hook, then separate the cords into pairs. Tie knots about 2-3 inches down from the top.

Step 4: Cross the pairs and tie another set of knots lower, creating a diamond pattern. Repeat until you have a net big enough to hold the jar.

Step 5: Place your yogurt jar into the net, adjusting knots until it fits snugly. Finish with a secure knot under the jar to hold it in place.

Step 6: Add your plant or greenery, then hang the planter in your favorite corner like by the window, on a stand, or even outside.

Tips:

If you’re new to macramé, keep the pattern simple. Even basic knots create a beautiful effect.

You can experiment with colored cords for a playful twist or natural cotton for a timeless look.
