How to Transform Yogurt Jars into Adorable Succulent Planters

There’s something grounding about tending to small plants. Place a succulent inside a frosted yogurt jar, and it’s as if you’ve created a little sanctuary in glass.

Tie on a colored string, add a charm, and suddenly each planter feels like it carries its own personality.

Specially, these jars are reminders that beauty doesn’t have to be extravagant; it can live quietly in simple forms, thriving on light, air, and just a little water.

Materials Needed

  • Clean yogurt jars (frosted or clear, about 3” tall)
  • Small succulents or mini cacti
  • Potting mix for succulents (well-draining soil)
  • Gravel or small pebbles (1/2 cup per jar)
  • Twine, yarn, or thin cord in various colors
  • Charms, beads, or pendants for decoration
  • Spoon or small scoop

Step-by-step Guide

Step 1: Place a thin layer of pebbles at the bottom of each jar to help with drainage.

Step 2: Add a scoop of succulent potting mix over the pebbles. Don’t overfill; leave space for planting.

Step 3: Gently remove your succulent or cactus from its container, loosen roots lightly, and plant it into the jar. Then fill around it with more soil, pressing lightly to secure.

Step 4: Wipe the rim of the jar clean, then decorate the outside with string, charms, or beads tied snugly around the neck.

You can choose colors that complement your plant’s tone like earthy twine for rustic charm or bright cord for playful energy.

Step 5: Place your planters in a sunny spot, ideally where they’ll get 4-6 hours of indirect light.

Now you just water sparingly; once every two weeks is usually enough.

Tips:

These little jars look gorgeous grouped together in threes.

I’ve used mine on a desk before, and they gave a surprisingly big lift to the space, it’s like working next to tiny guardians of calm.
