How to Sew Whimsical Fabric Mushrooms with Scrap FabricsBy piecing together bright fabrics for the caps and simple cream-colored cloth for the stems, you create mushrooms that look like they popped out of a storybook.

Furthermore, they’re quirky, cuddly, and just the right touch of magic to bring nature indoors.

Materials Needed

  • Assorted cotton fabric scraps (5”×5” squares)
  • Plain cream or beige cotton fabric (4”×6” pieces)
  • Matching thread
  • Polyester stuffing (small bag)
  • Needle for hand-stitching details
  • Sewing machine & scissors
  • Paper mushroom pattern (cap + stem)

Step-by-step Guide

Step 1: Start by cutting out a mushroom stem shape from beige fabric.

For the cap, you can stitch together colorful fabric scraps into a patchwork square and then cut into a rounded cap shape.

Step 2: Place the cap and stem pieces right sides together, and sew around the edges, leaving a small opening at the bottom of the stem.

Step 3: Turn the mushroom right side out and stuff it lightly with polyester filling.

Then keep the stem firm so it stands upright while the cap remains soft and squishy.

Step 4: Hand-stitch the opening closed with small, neat stitches.

Step 5: Add extra details if you like such as embroider tiny spots on the cap, sew a loop for hanging, or make a family of mushrooms in different sizes.

Tips:

When I made these, I realized mixing florals, polka dots, and solids made each mushroom look wonderfully unique, like characters in a tiny woodland tale.
