How to Sew a Playful Patchwork Octopus Toy

Picture an octopus who gathers colors from every reef of the ocean, turquoise corals, peachy shells, patterned stones and wears them proudly in its tentacles.

That’s what this plush feels like: a patchwork guardian of underwater tales, ready to wrap its arms around you.

Materials Needed

  • 8 mixed cotton fabric scraps in colorful patterns (4”×16” each)
  • Plain fabric for head and body – 2 pieces (10”×12” each)
  • Polyester stuffing (medium bag)
  • Black felt or embroidery thread
  • Sewing machine & matching thread
  • Fabric scissors & pins
  • Paper octopus pattern (head and tentacle shapes)

Step-by-step Guide

Step 1: Cut eight tentacle shapes from different patterned fabrics.

Then you sew each piece lengthwise (right sides together), then turn them right side out. Lightly stuff each tentacle, keeping them flexible.

Step 2: For the head, cut two oval shapes. Attach felt or embroidered eyes to the front before sewing.

Step 3: Pin all eight tentacles to the bottom edge of one oval head piece, arranging them evenly around the curve.

Next, place the second oval piece on top, right sides together, and sew around, leaving a small gap.

Step 4: Turn the head right side out and stuff until it’s firm and round. Then stitch the opening closed neatly by hand.

Step 5: Adjust the tentacles so they fall naturally. You can even quilt little details on the head for extra charm.

Tips:

When I stitched mine, I used contrasting fabrics such as polka dots, florals, and solids which gave the octopus so much character.
