How to Sew a Cherry Pie Pillow That Looks Sweet Enough to Eat

In this pillow, the cherry-print fabric peeks through like glistening pie filling, while the tan strips mimic the lattice crust you’d weave by hand.

The ruffled border looks almost flaky, as though it’s been brushed with butter and baked golden.

I bet this project is a conversation starter, a memory of childhood treats, and a cheerful reminder that homemade charm can be stitched into anything, even a place to rest your head.

Materials Needed

  • 1 round pillow form (14”–16” diameter)
  • ½ yard cherry-print cotton fabric
  • ½ yard tan or beige fabric (for crust and ruffle)
  • 1 roll of 2” wide tan fabric strips or bias tape
  • Matching thread (beige and red)
  • Sewing machine or hand needle
  • Pins and scissors
  • Iron for pressing seams

Step-by-step Guide

Step 1: Cut two round circles from the cherry fabric to match the size of your pillow form. These will be the front and back panels.

Step 2: On the front panel, arrange tan fabric strips in a crisscross lattice pattern. Then pin them down evenly and stitch along each edge to secure.

Step 3: Cut a long strip of tan fabric, about 3-4” wide, and gather it to form a ruffle. You can pin it around the edge of your cherry circle.

Step 4: Place the back panel on top of the front (right sides together), sandwiching the ruffle in between. Then sew around the circle, leaving a small opening.

Step 5: Turn the pillow cover right side out, insert the round pillow form, and hand-stitch the opening closed neatly.

Tips:

I found that lightly pressing the lattice strips before stitching helped them lay flat and look neat. If you want extra pie crust detail, topstitch the edges of the strips with darker thread for a baked, golden look.
