How to Repurpose Yogurt Jars into a Whimsical Bird Feeder

There’s something magical about giving birds a neighborhood of their own.

By combining yogurt jars with clever roofing and a central tower, you create an architectural piece that belongs as much in a fairytale as in your backyard.

Plus, each jar serves as a feeder, while the roofs provide charm and protection. It’s like a little avian town square, buzzing with life, color, and song.

Materials Needed

  • 6 yogurt jars (5 oz size, cleaned and labels removed)
  • 6 small wooden craft roofs (3”×3”, painted or stained yellow or any bright color)
  • 1 large glass bottle or vase (serves as central tower, 12-16” tall)
  • 20 marbles or decorative beads
  • 6 small spoons
  • Strong epoxy or outdoor adhesive (waterproof)
  • Metal hooks or sturdy wire
  • Optional: stained glass panels or wood scraps

Step-by-step Guide

Step 1: Clean your yogurt jars thoroughly. Make sure no residue remains inside.

Step 2: Build small wooden roofs by cutting and gluing thin wood panels, or purchase ready-made craft roofs. Then paint them in a bright, cheerful color for a cottage-like effect.

Step 3: Attach each roof to the top of the jars with strong adhesive. Let dry overnight.

Step 4: Secure the jars evenly around a tall glass bottle or vase, spacing them like the arms of a tower. You now reinforce with waterproof glue.

Step 5: Attach small spoons below the openings of the jars to act as perches where birds can stand while feeding.

Step 6: Decorate the central bottle with marbles, beads, or even stained glass for extra artistry.

Step 7: Fill jars with birdseed, hang the entire feeder from a strong hook, and place it in your garden.

Tips:

Position your feeder near trees or shrubs to give birds a safe landing spot. Over time, you’ll notice regular visitors turning this quirky little village into their favorite hangout.
