How to Make The Grinch Propane Tank Decoration

Imagine walking onto your porch and being greeted by the Grinch himself, smirking as if he’s about to steal your Christmas lights.

This upcycled propane tank captures that exact moment from Dr. Seuss’s tale. Painted a vivid green with hand-drawn features and finished off with a Santa hat, it turns scrap into holiday magic.

Materials Needed

  • 1 empty propane tank (10-20 lb size is perfect)
  • Sandpaper (120- and 220-grit)
  • Metal primer spray (1 can)
  • Green spray paint (1-2 cans, glossy or satin finish)
  • Black permanent paint marker or acrylic paint
  • Yellow acrylic paint
  • Paintbrushes (fine detail and medium)
  • Santa hat (standard adult size, felt with pompom)
  • Protective gear: gloves, safety glasses, mask

Step-by-step Guide

Step 1: Clean your propane tank thoroughly and sand off any rust or old paint. This will help your primer and paint stick smoothly.

Step 2: Apply a coat of primer evenly across the surface and let it dry fully. Primer prevents chipping and keeps the green color vivid.

Step 3: Spray the entire tank with green paint. Hold the can about 10-12 inches away and move in steady strokes to avoid drips. Apply two light coats instead of one heavy coat.

Step 4: Once dry, sketch the Grinch’s face using a pencil or chalk. Then trace over your lines with a black paint marker or fine brush and acrylic paint.

Step 5: Fill in the eyes with bright yellow paint and add tiny black pupils for that mischievous glare.

Step 6: Let the face dry completely, then place a Santa hat over the top for the finishing touch. Secure it with double-sided tape or a dab of hot glue if needed.

Tips & Notes: If you’re nervous about freehand drawing, print out a Grinch stencil, cut it, and trace it onto the tank first.
