Think of this project as bottling up a moment in time. With just a bit of clay, you can create a personal keepsake that holds your pet’s paw print in perfect detail.
It’s simple, it’s heartfelt, and it lasts. Add paint, engrave their name, or keep it raw for a natural look.
Either way, you’ll have a token of their presence, something that speaks louder than words when you look back years from now.
Materials Needed
- 1 pack of air-dry clay (about 500g)
- Rolling pin (or glass bottle)
- Wax paper (to prevent sticking)
- Straw (to punch a hole for hanging, optional)
- Non-toxic paint (small set, 3-5 colors)
- Paintbrushes (fine and medium sizes)
- Permanent marker (for names/dates)
- Ribbon or twine (12-15 inches, optional)
Step-by-step Guide
Step 1: Roll out your clay on a sheet of wax paper to about ½-inch thickness. This gives enough depth for the paw print to press in clearly.
Step 2: Gently press your pet’s paw into the clay, holding it steady for a few seconds so the pads leave a full impression.
Step 3: Use a straw to punch a small hole at the top if you’d like to hang the keepsake later.
Step 4: Let the clay dry completely (24-48 hours depending on thickness). Place it in a safe spot where it won’t be disturbed.
Step 5: Once hardened, decorate as you like, paint the paw, add your pet’s name, or write the date with a marker. Keep it simple or go all out with colors.
Step 6: Thread a ribbon through the hole if you want to hang it, or leave it as a flat keepsake for display on a shelf.
Tips:
If your pet is a little wiggly, try practicing with playdough first. You can also make multiples at once including one for you, one as a sweet gift for family.
