How to Make a Whimsical Evergreen Gnome for Your YardIf you’re looking for a holiday project that connects you with nature, this evergreen gnome is the perfect fit.

The smell of fresh pine, the rustic look of branches, and the cozy fabric details come together to create an outdoor decoration that feels both whimsical and heartwarming.

Plus, you can size him up or down depending on the space you’re decorating.

Materials Needed

  • 1 tomato cage (36” tall, or adjust size as desired)
  • Fresh evergreen branches (cedar, pine, or fir – about 20-30 boughs, 18”-24” long each)
  • 1 pair of red mittens (standard adult size)
  • 1 large red felt piece (24”×36” for hat, adjust for size)
  • 1 wooden ball or round ornament (4”-5” diameter)
  • Floral wire (20-30 ft)
  • Wire cutters & scissors
  • Optional: small weights or tent stakes to secure in the ground

Step-by-step Guide

Step 1: Flip the tomato cage upside down so the pointed ends face upward. These will help form the base of the gnome’s hat.

Step 2: Attach evergreen branches around the cage using floral wire, starting from the bottom and working upward.

Next, overlap branches to create a full, bushy beard effect.

Step 3: Once the greenery is secure, place the large wooden ball or ornament just below the top of the cage, it will serve as the gnome’s nose. Wire it firmly in place.

Step 4: Wrap the red felt into a cone shape to form a tall, floppy hat. Then slide it over the top of the cage and let it bend naturally for character.

Step 5: Attach red mittens on each side of the greenery using wire or safety pins. Adjust until they look like cozy hands peeking out.

Step 6: Secure the entire structure outdoors by placing weights inside the base or staking it into the ground.

Tip:

You can give your gnome even more personality by adding a small scarf, fairy lights, or a dusting of faux snow on his hat.
