How to Make a Rustic Frame Photo Display with Twine and Clothespins

There’s something poetic about photos floating within an empty frame, suspended on twine like clothes on a line.

This display turns an ordinary wall into a space where memories breathe freely, unbound by glass or borders.

Each clothespin becomes a keeper of stories such as holidays, birthdays, candid smiles that dangle together in harmony.

It’s a reminder that life isn’t static; it shifts, just like the photos you clip and replace over time. The added flowers or decorations on the corners make it feel like art layered with love.

Materials Needed

  • 1 large empty frame (around 18”×24” or bigger for best effect)
  • Twine or jute rope (about 6-8 feet)
  • 30 mini wooden clothespins
  • Printed photos (Polaroid style or 4”×6” prints work beautifully)
  • Hot glue gun or staple gun
  • Decorative flowers or paper embellishments (optional)

Step-by-step Guide

Step 1: Find a frame you love, thrifted, rustic, or ornate works best. Then remove any glass or backing so only the frame remains.

Step 2: Cut twine to fit across the frame horizontally, leaving a little slack so it hangs loosely. You secure each end with hot glue or staples at the back of the frame. Space the rows evenly apart.

Step 3: Print your favorite photos in a size that matches the space between twine rows. Polaroid-style prints add extra charm.

Step 4: Use mini clothespins to clip your photos onto the twine. You can mix vertical and horizontal shots for a more playful look.

Step 5: If you want to decorate further, glue faux flowers, paper rosettes, or fabric embellishments to the frame corners.

Step 6: Hang the frame on your wall and enjoy a rotating gallery of your family’s stories.

Tips: I’ve learned that adding handwritten captions to your photos makes the display even more special.
