How to Make a Fragrant Hanging Garland with Dried Oranges and SpicesThis garland proves that less can be more. Simple twine, dried oranges, and fragrant spices combine to create an understated yet elegant hanging piece.

It’s lightweight, easy to make, and perfect for holiday decorating or adding a nature-inspired accent to your everyday home.

Moreover, the star shapes of the anise give it a delicate charm, like tiny bursts of texture against the smooth citrus.

Materials Needed

  • 8-10 dried orange slices (various sizes for variety)
  • 10-12 whole star anise pods
  • 1 long piece of jute twine (about 3-4 feet)
  • Large sewing needle or skewer (to thread items)
  • Scissors
  • Optional: small wooden beads

Step-by-step Guide

Step 1: Cut a piece of twine about 3-4 feet long, leaving extra for tying knots at both ends.

Step 2: Using a large needle or skewer, carefully poke a hole near the top of each dried orange slice.

Step 3: Start threading your garland by alternating an orange slice and a star anise pod. To secure the star anise, thread the twine through one of its center points.

Step 4: Slide each piece down the twine, spacing them evenly. Then add small wooden beads between them if you want a more decorative look.

Step 5: Once everything is strung, tie a knot at each end of the garland to keep the items from sliding off.

Step 6: Hang your garland in a doorway, across a window, or along a mantel.

Tips:

If the star anise feels fragile, add a small drop of hot glue on the twine behind it to keep it in place.

You can also sprinkle a bit of cinnamon or clove oil on the twine for a stronger fragrance.
