How to Make A Family Tree Embroidery Hoop

Imagine holding your family history in a frame you stitched yourself AND this embroidery hoop makes that possible.

The design is straightforward: a central trunk stitched in brown floss, spreading branches that carry each family member’s name. You don’t need advanced embroidery skills, only patience and care.

Whether you gift it to parents, create one for a wedding, or stitch it as a legacy project, this hoop will hold a place of honor in any home.

Materials Needed

  • 1 embroidery hoop (10″-12″)
  • Neutral cotton or linen fabric (cut at least 3″ larger than the hoop)
  • Embroidery floss in brown (tree trunk and branches), green (leaves), and accent colors (flowers/hearts)
  • Embroidery floss in black or dark shades
  • Embroidery needle and small sharp scissors
  • Fabric pencil or washable marker
  • Optional: beads or sequins
  • Optional: felt backing

Step-by-step Guide

Step 1: Stretch your fabric tightly inside the embroidery hoop, making sure it’s smooth and centered. A neutral base like beige or gray makes the design pop.

Step 2: Lightly sketch a tree trunk with spreading branches using a pencil. At the same time, plan where names will go so you leave enough space for each.

Step 3: Use brown embroidery floss and a stem stitch to create the trunk and branches. Start from the base and work your way outward.

Step 4: Write each family member’s name lightly in pencil. Then embroider the names with backstitch or chain stitch using dark-colored floss for legibility.

Step 5: Add leaves along the branches with green floss using lazy daisy stitches. For extra personality, stitch tiny flowers or hearts beside couples or special family connections.

Step 6: Once complete, secure all threads neatly at the back. Optionally, cut a circle of felt and glue or stitch it to cover the back for a polished finish.
