Out of the garden and into the realm of magic, a humble okra pod can become a tiny messenger of Halloween’s charm.
With a coat of green paint and a touch of black tulle, it transforms into a witch ready to take flight.
This craft is a quiet ode to the fantastical, proving that with a little creativity, a simple piece of nature can be given a new, enchanted life.
Hanging this witch feels like you’re inviting a bit of autumn magic and folklore to your home, a silent guardian for all your spooky secrets.
Materials Needed
- A dried okra pod (one with an interesting, crooked shape works best!)
- Green, black, red, and pink craft paint
- Black rope or thick twine
- A small black bottle cap or foam cone
- Black felt or paper
- Black tulle
- Purple and orange ribbon
- Wooden beads (painted purple and orange)
- Hot glue gun and glue sticks
- Strong twine or cord
Step-by-step Guide
Step 1: Start by painting your okra pod with a vibrant green craft paint.
You can use a sculpting tool or simply dab the paint on to create a bumpy texture for the warty nose and chin, adding to the witch’s spooky charm. Let the paint dry completely.
Step 2: Once the green is dry, add the facial features. Use a thin brush to paint on spooky eyes, a crooked mouth, and a small red tongue peeking out.
You can also use a dot of pink paint for rosy cheeks.
Step 3: Next, you’ll make her hair and veil. Cut a small circle of black tulle and a few small pieces of black rope or twine.
Also, glue the rope to the sides of the okra pod for hair, and then glue the tulle to the top to create a mysterious veil.
Step 4: Now for the iconic hat. Glue a bottle cap or foam cone onto a circle of black felt or paper to create the classic witch hat shape.
You decorate it with a purple ribbon band and any other small accents you like, such as a tiny flower.
Step 5: Put it all together by gluing the hat onto the top of the okra pod, right over the veil. Then use hot glue to add little ribbon bows around the neck and hat for a final flourish.
Step 6: To hang your witch, string a few painted wooden beads onto a piece of twine, alternating between purple and orange.
Finally, tie small ribbon bows between the beads. Then, loop the twine through the top of the witch’s hat and tie a knot to secure it.
Tips:
Don’t worry about finding a perfectly straight okra pod; the more crooked and unique it is, the more personality your witch will have!
This project is perfect for getting a little messy and creative. I had so much fun making these for a Halloween party.
Each one turned out different and had its own wonderfully wicked expression! They look fantastic hanging from a doorknob or a branch for a centerpiece.
