Spiders may give you the creeps, but when your little one wears this costume, you’ll only hear “aww.”
The secret is in the floppy stuffed legs attached with string, they swing side to side as your child moves, making the costume come alive.
It’s a simple DIY project with big impact, and all you need is some black fabric, stuffing, and imagination.
Materials Needed
- 1 black long-sleeve shirt (child-size, cotton or stretchy)
- 1 pair of black leggings (child-size, ankle length)
- 4 pairs of black socks (crew length, to create 8 spider legs)
- 1 bag of polyester stuffing (about 12-16 oz)
- 1 spool of black thread (10-12 ft total)
- 1 headband or tiara (optional)
- Hot glue gun or needle & thread
Step-by-step Guide
Step 1: Stuff the black socks with polyester filling until they’re plump but still flexible. Then seal the open ends with hot glue or a few stitches.
Step 2: Attach two stuffed socks on each side of the shirt, evenly spaced, to make four extra legs. The child’s arms and legs act as the other four.
Step 3: Tie black string from the wrist of your child’s shirt to the first stuffed leg, and repeat for the second.
This makes the fake legs move whenever your child lifts their arms.
Step 4: Dress your child in the black shirt and leggings, slip on the tiara (or spider headband), and watch as they transform into the friendliest arachnid on the block.
Tip:
If you want extra Halloween flair, add googly eyes to the headband for a many-eyed spider look!
