How to Make a Colorful Patchwork Christmas Tree OrnamentThis ornament feels like a memory quilt in the shape of a Christmas tree.

Each mismatched fabric scrap becomes part of a colorful mosaic, stitched together with visible thread that celebrates imperfection.

Moreover, a cheerful button topper and handmade loop make it ready to hang.

It’s the perfect way to use those leftover fabric pieces from past projects, carrying bits of your crafting journey into the holiday season.

Materials Needed

  • Assorted fabric scraps (about 3” × 3” each, mix of patterns/colors)
  • Fusible interfacing or felt backing (6” × 8” piece)
  • Embroidery floss or colorful thread (5-6 colors)
  • Hand-sewing needle
  • 5-6 small buttons (0.5-1 inch wide)
  • Ribbon strip (8 inches long, 1 inch wide)
  • Fabric glue or sewing machine (optional)
  • Scissors and pinking shears

Step-by-step Guide

Step 1: Cut your backing fabric (felt or interfacing) into a triangle shape about 6 inches tall and 4 inches wide at the base.

Step 2: Arrange your fabric scraps onto the triangle, overlapping slightly. Don’t worry about precision as patchwork is all about personality.

Step 3: Use embroidery floss to secure each scrap with visible stitches. You can try cross-stitches, zigzags, or even freestyle lines to add texture.

Step 4: Sew or glue buttons onto the tree as ornaments. Then add one at the top with a small tuft of yarn or fringe for extra flair.

Step 5: Attach the ribbon at the top as a hanging loop. Stitch or glue it securely.

Step 6: Trim any uneven edges and admire your unique ornament, it’s ready to brighten your tree with homespun charm!

Tips:

If you’re making these with kids, let them pick fabric scraps from old clothes—it makes the ornament extra meaningful.
