How to Keep Your Pup Safe and Dry with a Roofed Dog Run

Picture your dog dashing out in the morning, tail wagging, without you worrying about wet grass or sudden downpours.

The covered roof transforms the run into a dependable all-weather space.

No more wiping muddy paws every time they come back inside, just happy play and cozy naps in their little house.

Plus, this setup feels more like a sheltered retreat than a simple pen, giving your pup freedom and comfort in every season.

Materials Needed

  • 8-10 metal or wood posts (8 ft tall)
  • Heavy-duty welded wire panels (4-6 ft high, enough to enclose the space)
  • Corrugated metal or polycarbonate roofing sheets (depends on run size)
  • Gravel or pea stone (6-8 bags, 0.5 cu ft each)
  • Concrete mix (4-6 bags, for setting posts)
  • Doghouse (medium or large size)
  • Screws, brackets, and roofing nails
  • Measuring tape, post-hole digger, and drill

Step-by-step Guide

Step 1: Mark the layout of your run, deciding on its size (common builds are 8×12 ft).

You need to dig post holes about 2 ft deep at each corner.

Step 2: Set the posts in concrete, making sure they’re level and aligned. Let them cure for at least 24 hours.

Step 3: Attach welded wire panels or fencing securely to the posts, using brackets or U-clamps.

Step 4: Install the roofing sheets over the top, angling them slightly so rainwater drains off easily.

Step 5: Spread a thick layer of gravel or pea stone inside the run to improve drainage and keep paws clean.

Step 6: Place the doghouse toward the back or side for extra shelter, and add a soft bed inside for comfort.

Tips:

If your area gets heavy snow, choose a sloped roof design to prevent buildup.

For warmer climates, use lighter roofing material that won’t trap heat.
