If you’re looking for a beginner-friendly mosaic project, this bean-decorated pot is the perfect pick.
You’ll take a plain terracotta or plastic pot and transform it with rows of colorful beans, creating a design that’s earthy and charming.
It’s versatile too, you can use it for succulents, herbs, or even as a decorative holder for utensils or craft supplies.
The process is simple, but the results look impressively handmade.
Materials Needed
- 1 terracotta or plastic pot (6” diameter, 5” height)
- Red kidney beans – approx. 200 beans
- Green mung beans – approx. 100 beans
- Yellow corn kernels – approx. 80 kernels
- Beige lentils or soybeans – approx. 100 beans
- Strong craft glue (or hot glue gun with glue sticks)
- Clear spray sealant
- Pencil and ruler
Step-by-step Guide
Step 1: Clean and dry your pot thoroughly to ensure glue sticks well. If using terracotta, you may want to lightly sand the surface for better grip.
Step 2: Use a pencil and ruler to lightly mark horizontal lines around the pot, this will guide your rows and keep everything straight.
Step 3: Starting at the bottom, apply glue in small sections. Attach one row of corn kernels, pressing them firmly into place.
Then allow 5 minutes of drying before moving to the next row.
Step 4: Continue upward with red kidney beans, followed by mung beans, then beige lentils. Repeat or vary the order to create colorful bands of texture.
Step 5: For extra detail, you can create a circular flower motif on one side of the pot by clustering beans into a pattern before filling the rest of the row.
Step 6: Once finished, let the glue dry overnight.
You can also spray the pot with a clear sealant to protect the beans from moisture and add a polished finish.
Notes:
If you plan to use this pot outdoors, line it with a waterproof coating before planting to help preserve the mosaic.
Indoors, it can double as a stylish storage container for pens, brushes, or kitchen utensils.
