How to Create a Rustic Hanging with Pinecones and Dried OrangesThink of this hanging as nature’s wind chime. The pinecones add weight, while the oranges glow like tiny suns dangling in the air.

It’s a craft that doesn’t just decorate but tells a story: of walks in the woods, of harvest seasons, and of finding beauty in simple, natural things.

Materials Needed

  • 1 sturdy branch (12-15 inches long)
  • 6-7 pinecones (medium-sized)
  • 6-7 dried orange slices (2-3 inches wide)
  • Natural jute twine or string (about 6-7 feet total)
  • Hot glue gun (optional)
  • Scissors

Step-by-step Guide

Step 1: Collect a branch that’s sturdy but not too heavy. Then clean off any loose bark or dirt.

Step 2: Cut lengths of twine (8-12 inches each), varying slightly so the items hang at different levels.

Step 3: Tie pinecones onto half of the twine pieces by looping the string around the top scales.

If they don’t hold well, add a dab of hot glue for extra security.

Step 4: Thread the other twine pieces through the dried orange slices. You can poke a small hole near the top of each slice with a skewer or needle.

Step 5: Tie each decorated twine strand to the branch, spacing them evenly across. Alternate pinecones and oranges for balance.

Step 6: Cut one long piece of twine (about 20 inches) and tie each end to the sides of the branch, creating a hanging loop.

Step 7: Hang your piece on a wall or door hook, adjusting the strands so everything falls naturally.

Tips:

For a festive touch, tuck in sprigs of evergreen or tie tiny bows on some strands. You can even rub cinnamon oil on the pinecones for a seasonal scent.
