Imagine walking up to a cozy cabin door and being greeted by a barrel overflowing with bright red poinsettias and winter greenery.
The colors pop against the wooden texture, like a little Christmas feast for the eyes.
It feels warm, joyful, and welcoming, exactly what a holiday planter should be.
Materials Needed
- 1 wooden barrel-style planter (18-20” wide)
- 3-4 poinsettia plants (6-8” pots)
- Fresh holly leaves with berries (10-12 stems)
- Evergreen branches (15-20 stems)
- Floral foam or soil
- Optional: extra faux berry picks
Step-by-step Guide
Step 1: Place soil or floral foam inside the barrel to hold your arrangement securely. Make sure it’s firm so the plants don’t shift.
Step 2: Begin by planting the poinsettias toward the center of the barrel.
You should space them evenly, letting their red blooms face outward for balance.
Step 3: Add evergreen branches around the poinsettias as a backdrop.
Then tuck them in at an angle so they spill slightly over the barrel edge for a natural draped look.
Step 4: Insert holly stems with berries between the evergreens and poinsettias.
Next, spread them around to create pops of red and green contrast.
Step 5: Step back and check the balance of the planter.
Also, you can fill any empty spots with extra berry picks or more greenery. Adjust stems until the display looks full and symmetrical.
Note:
Keep the poinsettias out of harsh wind and water them lightly to keep their vibrant color lasting through the season.
