How to Create a Natural Birch and Evergreen Christmas PlanterThink of a walk through the woods after the first snowfall, birch trees standing tall, red berries peeking through frosty greens, and pinecones dusted with white.

That’s exactly what this planter recreates for your doorstep.

It’s a little woodland story in a pot, blending rustic charm with a burst of Christmas red.

Materials Needed

  • 1 large outdoor planter (16-18” tall)
  • 3 birch branches (about 24-30” long)
  • Fresh evergreen cuttings (pine, fir, and cedar – 20-25 stems)
  • Red berry picks or real winterberry branches (5-7 stems)
  • 2-3 pinecones, lightly frosted with artificial snow spray
  • Soil, sand, or floral foam

Step-by-step Guide

Step 1: Fill your planter with soil or sand to provide a sturdy base for the branches.

Step 2: Insert the birch branches toward the back or center of the planter, arranging them at different angles for height and dimension.

Step 3: Surround the branches with fresh evergreen cuttings, layering different types (pine, cedar, fir) to create a full, natural look.

Next, allow some pieces to drape over the edge.

Step 4: Tuck in red berry stems near the center for a vibrant pop of color. You now position them upright so they stand out against the greenery.

Step 5: Add the frosted pinecones toward the front, securing them with floral wire if needed. These act as cozy accents, finishing the woodland feel.

Note:

If your winters are extra windy, anchor the birch branches deeper into the soil or use floral foam with zip ties to keep everything stable.
