I love how this project transforms an ordinary jar into something extraordinary.
Adding moss, bark, and little details creates the feeling of a miniature stable, and when the fairy lights glow, it feels like you’re peeking into that holy night.
It’s simple to make but so meaningful, making it one of those handmade gifts that people will treasure year after year.
Materials Needed
- 1 large glass jar with lid (about 1-2 liters)
- Small Nativity figurines (1-3 inches tall)
- Fairy lights (1 strand, battery-operated)
- Green moss (about ½ cup)
- Small bark or wood pieces
- Faux snow or white glitter
- Decorative ribbon or mesh (18-20 inches)
- Hot glue gun and glue sticks
Step-by-step Guide
Step 1: Clean your jar and dry it thoroughly before starting.
Step 2: Place a layer of moss at the bottom to create the ground. Then add bark or small wood pieces at the back to mimic a rustic stable wall.
Step 3: Position your Nativity figurines at the center. You can use hot glue sparingly to secure them if needed.
Step 4: Sprinkle faux snow around the base and lightly on the bark for a wintery look.
Step 5: Insert fairy lights around the inside of the jar, tucking them gently so they highlight the figures without overpowering.
You should also leave the switch outside or hidden at the back.
Step 6: Tie a festive ribbon or mesh around the lid and secure with a bow for a finished touch.
Step 7: Switch on the lights and admire your glowing Nativity jar, it’s ready to gift or display.
Tip:
If you’re making several as gifts, use smaller jars with mini figurines for an adorable collection of lanterns.
