How to Craft Playful Witch Décor from Yogurt Jars

Imagine tiny witches lined up on your shelf, each one looking like she’s ready to stir up mischief in a bubbling cauldron.

These yogurt jar witches are as much about fun as they are about creativity, you paint, you craft, and suddenly your kitchen scraps turn into magical characters.

Plus, they’re the kind of handmade decorations kids love to help with, making Halloween feel less about store-bought items and more about shared laughter and stories.

Materials Needed

  • 2-4 clean yogurt jars (3″ tall × 2.5″ diameter)
  • Green acrylic paint (4 oz bottle)
  • Black felt sheets (2 pieces, 9”×12”)
  • Yarn for hair (1 skein, black or brown, cut into 3-4″ strands)
  • Hot glue gun + 4 glue sticks
  • Small jute rope or twine (about 2 feet)
  • Black permanent marker or paint pen
  • Orange and white paint pens
  • Scissors

Step-by-step Guide

Step 1: Paint your yogurt jars with green acrylic paint and let them dry completely. Two coats give the best coverage.

Step 2: Use a black marker or paint pen to draw the witch’s face with eyes, eyebrows, smile, and that signature pointy nose.

Next, add rosy cheeks with orange paint and white teeth for a silly grin.

Step 3: Cut yarn into 3-4” strands for hair. Then glue the strands along the rim of the jar to create a full head of witchy hair.

Step 4: To make the hat, cut a circle (about 3.5″ wide) from black felt for the brim and roll another felt triangle into a cone for the top.

You continue to glue them together, then add twine around the base as trim.

Step 5: Secure the hat onto the jar with hot glue. Tilt it slightly for a playful, crooked look.

Step 6: Display your witches proudly! Line them on a windowsill or group them together as a little coven on your Halloween table.

Tips:

If kids are helping, swap out the hot glue for craft glue and let them draw their own silly faces. Every witch will turn out different, and that’s the magic of it.
