How to Craft Oversized Ornaments That Steal the Show

How to Craft Oversized Ornaments That Steal the ShowBig ornaments always make me smile. They remind me of the way children see Christmas, larger than life, full of sparkle and magic.

Creating these beauties lets you bring that same childlike wonder into your home.

With a few supplies and a touch of greenery, you’ll have holiday accents that look like they came straight from a winter boutique.

Materials Needed

  • 3 large lightweight plastic or foam spheres (8-12” diameter)
  • Acrylic paint (white, black, blush pink)
  • Large velvet ribbons (2”-3” wide)
  • Hot glue gun + glue sticks
  • Faux greenery sprigs (pine, cedar, or mistletoe)
  • Thick jute rope (12-14” per ornament)
  • Craft knife (for texturing if desired)

Step-by-step Guide

Step 1: Paint each sphere in your chosen color and let it dry fully. You can leave them solid or lightly distress with sandpaper for a vintage touch.

Step 2: Cut a piece of jute rope and form a loop, then glue it securely to the top of each ornament to mimic a hanger.

Step 3: Tie a large velvet ribbon into a bow and attach it just under the rope loop. Then position greenery sprigs behind the bow for a natural accent.

Step 4: Place your ornaments in a tray, on pedestals, or even under the tree as oversized décor.

Tip:

When I made these, I brushed a little metallic gold paint onto the edges, it gave the ornaments a soft, glowing highlight under Christmas lights.
