If you’re drawn to Scandinavian simplicity or farmhouse-inspired charm, these macramé ornaments are perfect for your holiday décor.
They look beautiful in their natural state but can easily be dressed up with plaid ribbons, mini greenery, or even a pop of metallic thread.
What makes them special is their versatility so you can craft a star, wreath, or even a tiny hat, all with the same soft cord.
They’re light, eco-friendly, and timeless pieces you’ll want to hang up year after year.
Materials Needed
- Macramé cotton cord (3-5 mm thickness, 2-3 yards per ornament)
- Wooden or metal rings (2-3” diameter, for wreaths and tassels)
- Mini plaid ribbons (6-8” each)
- Small greenery sprigs or faux berries (optional)
- Scissors
- Hot glue gun
- Gold or jute string (6” per ornament)
Step-by-step Guide
Step 1: Cut several cords to 12–14” length for tassels and wreaths, or 1820” for stars and larger designs.
Step 2: Attach cords to a ring (if using one) with a lark’s head knot, or fold them in half and tie together to start shapes like the star or hat.
Step 3: Create simple square knots or alternating half-hitch knots until your ornament takes shape. For tassels, let the ends hang loose and trim evenly.
Step 4: Fluff the cord ends with a comb or fingers to give a soft, fringed effect.
Step 5: Add small embellishments like plaid bows, sprigs of greenery, or faux berries. Then secure them with a dab of hot glue.
Step 6: Tie a 6” piece of jute or gold string at the top to create a hanging loop.
Step 7: Repeat with different shapes such as stars, wreaths, tassels to build a full, cohesive macramé set.
Tip:
If you’re new to macramé, start with the simple wreath style before trying more intricate shapes like the snowflake. You’ll build confidence knot by knot!
