How to Craft a Bold Axe Lamp with Wood and SteelImagine the moment an axe strikes wood. Now capture that moment forever, but instead of splitting logs, it illuminates your space.

This axe lamp takes an everyday tool and reimagines it as sculpture, part functional light, part artwork.

Additionally, the handle carries the cord like a climbing vine, leading to an Edison bulb that hangs like a captured ember.

Materials Needed

  • 1 old axe (cleaned and polished, handle intact)
  • Chunky wood base (8-10” wide, at least 3” thick)
  • Lamp cord with switch (fabric-wrapped cords look best)
  • Edison bulb with socket
  • Drill with spade bit (to run wiring)
  • Epoxy adhesive or screws
  • Sandpaper and wood finish (optional)

Step-by-step Guide

Step 1: Select your axe, vintage ones work beautifully because of their character. Then clean off rust and polish the blade lightly, but don’t erase all the history.

Step 2: Prepare the base by sanding it smooth. Drill a hole in the center where the axe will sit, ensuring it’s snug and stable.

You can use epoxy or screws to secure it firmly.

Step 3: Drill a discreet channel for the cord, either through the base or alongside the axe handle.

Next, thread the cord around the handle, letting it spiral naturally until it reaches the socket.

Step 4: Attach the socket and bulb at the end of the cord, positioning it to hang just below the axe head.

Step 5: Test your lamp, adjust for balance, and admire the dramatic silhouette created when the bulb glows against the axe.

Tips:

A warm Edison-style bulb enhances the rustic vibe.

If you want extra character, leave small chips and imperfections in the wood base, it adds to the raw, handmade charm.
