How to Build a Spiral Tree of Lights for Your YardImagine a Christmas tree made only of light, no branches, no needles, just a swirl of radiance against the night sky.

This spiral tree is exactly that, a glowing sculpture that dances when the evening falls.

It’s bold enough to be a centerpiece but gentle enough to blend into a yard filled with other decorations.

Once you see it lit, you’ll wonder how something so simple can feel so magical.

Materials Needed

  • 1 metal pole (8 ft tall, 1.5” diameter)
  • 1 heavy-duty base (metal plate or cement-filled bucket, 18” wide)
  • 50 ft of flexible wire or rebar
  • 100 ft of outdoor LED string lights (warm white recommended)
  • 1 large tree topper star (12-18” wide, LED-lit if possible)
  • 20-25 zip ties (8” long, outdoor grade)
  • Spray paint (optional: white or silver)
  • Measuring tape
  • Rubber mallet and drill

Step-by-step Guide

Step 1: Place your metal pole upright into the heavy-duty base. Make sure it stands straight and stable, this will be the tree’s trunk.

Step 2: Attach one end of your wire or rebar to the top of the pole.

Start bending it in a spiral downward, widening as you go, until you reach the bottom. You can adjust the spacing so each loop is even.

Step 3: Use zip ties to secure the spiral to the pole every 1218 inches. Then spray paint the spiral frame if you’d like it to blend better with the lights.

Step 4: Wrap your LED string lights around the spiral frame, starting from the top and working your way down. Keep the spacing even to create a smooth glow effect.

Step 5: Secure the lights with additional zip ties at key points so they don’t slip or sag.

Step 6: Place the lighted star at the top of the pole, attaching securely with screws or strong brackets.

Step 7: Plug in your lights and step back. You can also adjust the spiral loops if needed to make sure your tree looks balanced and evenly glowing.

Tip:

If you want to go bigger, use a 10-12 ft pole and double the length of lights.

Adding multiple spiral trees of different heights creates a magical “forest of lights” effect in your yard.
