Here's Full Guide to Make a Wood Shim Mirror Frame

If you’re craving a statement piece that looks high-end but is achievable in a weekend, this shim mirror is exactly the project for you.

It’s striking, yet built from humble materials. The pattern is versatile too, stain it dark for a moody, modern look, or keep it light and natural for airy, Scandinavian vibes.

Materials Needed

  • 1 round mirror (14″-18″ diameter works beautifully)
  • 40-60 wood shims (8″ long each, depending on mirror size)
  • 1 large round plywood base (20″-24″)
  • Wood stain or paint (walnut, gray wash, or any preferred finish)
  • Strong adhesive (wood glue or construction adhesive)
  • Sandpaper (120-220 grit)
  • Saw (if needed)
  • Hanging hardware

Step-by-step Guide

Step 1: Start with your plywood base. Mark the center and attach the mirror securely with adhesive. Let it cure fully.

Step 2: Arrange your shims around the mirror in a herringbone pattern, alternating the direction to create texture. Then lay everything out before gluing to get the spacing right.

Step 3: Once you’re happy with the layout, glue each shim in place, pressing firmly. You work outward in sections to maintain symmetry.

Step 4: Sand the edges lightly to smooth any rough cuts and keep the circle clean.

Step 5: Apply your chosen stain or paint, wiping excess for a rustic finish. Allow it to dry before hanging.

Step 6: Finally, attach sturdy hanging hardware on the back, since the piece will be a bit heavy.
