Turn your front yard into a scene straight from a candy land storybook with this handmade Christmas train.
Crafted with pastel pinks, frosted details, and oversized peppermint wheels, it feels like something Santa’s elves built after raiding a sweet shop.
The donut archway and lollipop props complete the festive setting, inviting guests to walk through a holiday of sugar and joy.
Materials Needed
- Large cardboard or plywood sheets for train structure (engine + cart)
- Foam circles or wood cutouts (painted like peppermints)
- Waffle cone patterned paper or paint
- Spray foam, glitter, and paint
- Plastic ornaments, donuts, or candy props (extra-large)
- Hot glue gun and weatherproof adhesive
- Acrylic paints in pastel and candy shades (pink, yellow, mint, etc.)
- Optional: String lights
Step-by-step Guide
Step 1: Build the main body of the train using cardboard or plywood. You should keep it box-shaped for easy construction.
Step 2: Cut out large wheels from foam or wood and paint them like peppermint swirls. Then attach securely to the sides.
Step 3: Create a cowcatcher using cardboard or wood and decorate it with waffle cone patterns.
Step 4: Add frosting details along the roof and edges using spray foam, then coat with glitter for sparkle.
Step 5: Place candy props like donuts, gumdrops, and lollipops around the train for extra sweetness.
Next, top it with an ice cream scoop made from a foam ball painted and decorated.
Step 6: (Optional) Outline the whole train with fairy lights so it glows beautifully at night.
