If you’re looking for a bookmark project that’s budget-friendly and versatile, popsicle stick bookmarks are a fantastic choice.
They’re lightweight, slim enough to slip between pages, and strong enough to last through many reads.
You can decorate them with decoupage paper, sheet music prints, or pastel paint to give each one a different personality.
Moreover, they’re quick to make, making them a great option for party favors, classroom crafts, or thoughtful handmade gifts for your book-loving friends.
Materials Needed
- Popsicle sticks (standard 4.5” × 0.4”, or jumbo 6” × 0.75” size)
- Acrylic paints, decoupage papers, or scrapbook sheets (cut into 1”×6” pieces)
- Mod Podge or clear-drying craft glue
- Paintbrush (½” flat brush)
- Small hole punch or craft drill (⅛” size)
- Keychain chain links or jump rings (2-3 per bookmark)
- Charms, beads, tassels, or pom-poms (1-2 per bookmark)
- Sandpaper (medium grit, 120-150)
- Optional: glitter paint or metallic markers
Step-by-step Guide
Step 1: Lightly sand the popsicle sticks to smooth out any rough edges. This prevents snagging on paper and gives a better surface for paint or glue.
Step 2: Paint or cover each stick. If painting, apply two thin coats of acrylic paint and let them dry.
If decoupaging, brush Mod Podge on the stick, place your cut paper over it, and seal with another coat of Mod Podge.
Step 3: Once dry, use a small hole punch or craft drill to make a hole at the top of the stick for attachments.
Step 4: Attach a jump ring or chain link through the hole. Then add a charm, bead, tassel, or pom-pom to personalize your bookmark.
Step 5: Let the decorations dangle naturally and check that the weight doesn’t pull too hard on the hole.
You can also reinforce the punched hole with a small drop of glue if needed.
Notes:
If you’re making these with kids, opt for yarn tassels or pom-poms instead of metal charms, they’re safer and softer.
For a festive version, decorate sticks with holiday-themed scrapbook paper and add bells or snowflake charms.
