DIY Wooden Crate Dresser With Rope HandlesAmazingly, this little dresser feels like it could have been pulled straight from a countryside cottage.

The rough edges of reclaimed wood, softened by time, pair beautifully with thick rope handles that invite your hand to tug.

Each drawer feels like a wooden box of treasures, tucked neatly into its frame.

It’s not glossy or polished, but that’s the beauty of it, it wears its imperfections proudly, reminding you that the best pieces aren’t bought, they’re built with heart.

Materials Needed

  • 4 wooden crates or handmade box-style drawers
  • Reclaimed wood planks
  • Thick rope (for handles, approx. 8-10″ per drawer)
  • Wood screws and drill
  • Sandpaper (medium and fine grit)
  • Optional: wood stain or whitewash

Step-by-step Guide

Step 1: Build or source your crates. Standard wooden crates work, or you can make simple boxes with reclaimed planks.

Step 2: Create the dresser frame by assembling four sides and a top from cut planks. Then secure with screws and sand lightly to smooth rough edges.

Step 3: Drill two holes in the front of each crate, then thread a rope handle through and knot it inside to secure.

Step 4: Slide the crates into the frame, adjusting spacing so they move smoothly.

Step 5: Finish the piece with a light stain, wax, or even a whitewash for a shabby-chic look or leave it raw for a pure rustic vibe.

Step 6: Style it in your space. Fill it with scarves in the entryway, craft supplies in the studio, or books and keepsakes in the living room.

Tips:

A little detail I’ve noticed, adding slightly uneven planks for the top gives it more character, almost like a farmhouse table.

If you want to make it extra personal, stencil words or patterns onto the drawer fronts.
