Think of these pom-poms as berries of winter abundance, strung together in a cascade of velvet richness.
Draped over a mantel or staircase, they become more than a garland, they feel like little jewels holding the season’s warmth.
This project is simple, yet the result is lush enough to rival store-bought décor.
Materials Needed
- Velvet fabric or pre-made velvet pom-poms (about 40-50 pieces, 3″ diameter each)
- Polyfill stuffing (1 lb bag if making your own pom-poms)
- Needle and strong thread (upholstery thread works best)
- Hot glue gun with glue sticks
- Jute twine or sturdy cord (8-10 feet long)
- Scissors
- Optional: glitter spray or metallic thread
Step-by-step Guide
Step 1: If making your own pom-poms, cut velvet fabric into 6″ circles.
Next, gather the edge with a running stitch, stuff with polyfill, and pull tight to form a plush ball. You secure with a knot.
Step 2: Repeat until you have 40-50 pom-poms for a full garland (fewer if you want a shorter length).
Step 3: Thread a long upholstery needle with jute twine or strong cord.
Begin stringing pom-poms one by one, spacing them close together for a fuller look.
Step 4: Knot each pom-pom in place or use a dot of hot glue to prevent sliding.
Step 5: Once strung, drape your garland across the mantel, staircase railing, or doorway.
You can also adjust the pom-poms so they sit evenly and fluff them for maximum fullness.
Step 6: Add optional accents like glitter spray or metallic thread interwoven for extra shine.
Notes:
A 10-foot garland usually needs about 45 pom-poms at 3″ each.
If you’d like a more dramatic effect, mix in larger (4″) pom-poms to break up the pattern.
