DIY Fabric Bow Garland That Brings Playful Holiday CheerImagine opening a box of old fabric scraps such as plaid from last winter’s pajamas, stripes from leftover ribbon, florals from a long-forgotten project.

Each piece carries its own memory, and now they come together in this bow garland.

Lined up side by side, the bows look like a row of gifts waiting to be unwrapped.

This is the kind of decoration that whispers nostalgia.

Once you hang it, your room feels softer, cozier, and touched with a little holiday magic that no store-bought garland could replace.

Materials Needed

  • Assorted fabric scraps (8-10 different patterns, cut into strips about 3″×20″)
  • Jute twine or cotton rope (8-10 feet long)
  • Hot glue gun (optional, for securing bows)
  • Scissors
  • Measuring tape

Step-by-step Guide

Step 1: Cut fabric into strips, each about 3″ wide and 20″ long. You can mix stripes, plaids, and solids for variety.

Step 2: Fold each strip into a bow, tying the center tightly so the tails hang naturally. Don’t worry if they’re not all the same as variation gives it charm.

Step 3: Stretch your twine or rope across a flat surface and start attaching bows by knotting them directly onto the string.

Step 4: Space the bows evenly (about 4-5″ apart), sliding them until the garland feels balanced.

Step 5: If needed, secure each bow with a small dot of hot glue so they don’t shift.

Step 6: Hang your garland across a mantel, wardrobe, or window, and fluff the bows for fullness.

Tips:

For extra dimension, layer smaller bows on top of larger ones or mix in a few ribbon bows for shine.

If you want a rustic feel, leave the fabric edges raw so they fray slightly, it adds texture.
