Imagine a dapper gentleman from another era, frozen in time, his shoes firmly planted and his bowler hat tipped just so.
Instead of being just a light source, it becomes a little scene.
Using salvaged shoe lasts and a vintage-style hat, it reuses simple objects in the most unexpected way.
It’s a reminder that design doesn’t always need to be serious; sometimes it’s about making you grin every time you walk past.
Materials Needed
- 2 wooden shoe lasts (antique or replica)
- 1 bowler hat (felt, vintage, or reproduction)
- Metal rods or sturdy lamp stems for “legs”
- Light socket and wiring kit
- Small round wooden base for stability
- Drill and screws
- Optional: fabric lining for the hat interior
Step-by-step Guide
Step 1: Attach the shoe lasts securely to the wooden base. These will act as the feet of your lamp.
Step 2: Fix two slim metal rods into the lasts, angling them slightly like legs. Ensure they are sturdy enough to support the hat.
Step 3: Wire your light socket and thread it through the rods. Then position the bulb so it will sit under the bowler hat.
Step 4: Hollow or carefully cut a small opening inside the bowler hat to allow heat to escape and fit over the bulb and socket.
Step 5: Place the hat gently on top, making sure it aligns with the rods. You may secure it with clips or leave it loose for easy removal.
Step 6: Screw in a bulb and switch it on.
The glow peeking out beneath the brim gives the illusion of a mysterious character standing in your room.
Tips:
For a theatrical touch, use an amber Edison bulb to add vintage warmth.
You could even swap the bowler for other hats like a fedora or top hat for a seasonal or personal twist.
