  • Guide on Making DIY Plastic Spoon Christmas Tree

I’ve always loved adding a personal touch to my Christmas decorations, and this year, I decided to make a stunning Christmas tree using plastic spoons.

It’s a simple yet creative project that turned out to be a delightful addition to my holiday decor.

Let me take you through how I did it step by step so you can create your own. Trust me, it’s as fun to make as it is beautiful to display!

Materials You’ll Need

You need to prepare:

  • Plastic spoons (about 50–70 pieces, depending on tree size)
  • A cardboard or foam cone (12” tall for a medium-sized tree)
  • Green spray paint or acrylic paint
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • A decorative star or topper
  • Beads, pearls, or ornaments
  • String of faux pearls or ribbon

Step 1: Prepare the Spoons

Start by gathering your plastic spoons. You’ll need to snap off the handles, leaving just the bowl of the spoon. This will be your “leaf” for the tree.

It’s easiest to snap the handles cleanly using a small pair of pliers, but I managed just fine with my hands.

Step 2: Create the Tree Base

I used a pre-made foam cone, but you can easily roll and tape cardboard into a cone shape. My cone was about 12 inches tall, but you can adjust the size based on how big you want your tree.

Step 3: Attach the Spoons

Starting from the bottom of the cone, glue the spoons in overlapping rows using a hot glue gun. Place each spoon so it slightly overlaps the one before it, like scales on a pinecone.

Work your way up row by row, ensuring the spoons cover the cone entirely. By the end, you’ll see the tree form taking shape.

Step 4: Paint the Tree

Once all the spoons are attached, take the tree outdoors or to a well-ventilated space and spray it with green paint, then let the paint dry completely before moving on to the decorations.

I used a satin finish for a subtle shine, but matte or glossy paint works just as well.

Step 5: Add the Finishing Touches

Now you can glue a small red star to the top and wrapped a string of faux pearls around the tree like garland.

For ornaments, I used beads and small decorative balls, attaching them with hot glue. You can also add glitter or other embellishments to make it truly unique.
