How to Carve a Paw Print Pumpkin for Halloween

Instead of the usual spooky faces, why not let your pet’s paws light up Halloween? A pumpkin carved with paw prints says “boo” in the sweetest way possible.

Each glowing cutout becomes a reminder of wagging tails and muddy paw tracks that brighten your life.

Place it by your door to welcome trick-or-treaters with a friendly, furry twist, or keep it indoors as a cozy seasonal lantern.

Either way, this project turns your pet into part of the Halloween magic.

Materials Needed

  • 1 medium or large pumpkin (10-12” diameter)
  • Pumpkin carving kit or serrated knife
  • Paw print stencil or template (optional)
  • Marker or pencil
  • Spoon or scraper
  • Tea light candles or LED pumpkin lights (2-3 pieces)

Step-by-step Guide

Step 1: Cut off the top of your pumpkin and scoop out all seeds and pulp until the inside is smooth.

Step 2: Choose a paw print design. You can freehand draw it with a marker or tape on a stencil for accuracy.

Step 3: Use your carving tools to carefully cut out the paw shapes. Work slowly around curves to keep the paw pads clean and defined.

Step 4: Wipe the pumpkin surface clean and place candles or LED lights inside to make the paw prints glow.

Step 5: Display your pumpkin proudly on your porch or near your pet’s favorite spot.

Now, snap a photo of your furry friend next to it for the ultimate keepsake.

Tips:

If you want your pumpkin to last longer, coat the carved edges with a thin layer of petroleum jelly to slow down drying.

For a fun twist, you can also carve your pet’s name alongside the paw prints.
