How to Make Collage Bookmarks with Vintage PersonalityThese bookmarks aren’t just page holders, they’re tiny canvases where you can play with humor, drama, and vintage charm.

Using cutouts of bold letters, 1950s-style ads, or even surreal images, you can create designs that tell little stories of their own.

Also, the bead tassels on top give them a playful finish, swinging out of the book like a wink.

Each bookmark ends up as unique as a mood board, letting you express yourself while recycling old magazines into something practical and fun.

Materials Needed

  • Cardstock or thick cardboard (cut into strips 2″ × 6″, 5-6 pieces)
  • Vintage magazines, newspapers, or printouts for collage
  • Alphabet beads or decorative beads (20-25 pieces)
  • Tassel cord, twine, or embroidery thread (12″ lengths, 5-6 pieces)
  • Glue stick or Mod Podge (1 small bottle)
  • Scissors (1 pair, sharp for clean cuts)
  • Hole punch (standard size, 1 piece)
  • Optional: Clear adhesive film or laminator sheets

Step-by-step Guide

Step 1: Cut your cardstock into rectangles (2″ × 6″) for bookmark bases. If you prefer sturdier ones, glue two pieces together and let dry.

Step 2: Flip through magazines and cut out words, images, and patterns that inspire you.

Of course, you can mix fonts, sizes, and shapes for more character.

Step 3: Arrange your cutouts on the bookmark before gluing, moving pieces until you’re happy with the layout. Then glue them down securely with a glue stick or Mod Podge.

Step 4: Seal the top with a thin coat of Mod Podge or cover with adhesive film to protect your design from wear. Let it dry fully.

Step 5: Punch a hole at the top of the bookmark and thread a piece of cord or twine through. Knot securely.

Step 6: String alphabet beads or colorful beads onto the tassel cord. Spell fun words or let the beads form a pattern.

Next, tie another knot at the end to secure.

Step 7: Test your bookmark in a favorite book, it should feel sturdy, and the beads should dangle playfully outside the pages.

Tips:

If you want a glossy, professional look, laminate your bookmarks. For a raw, artsy vibe, leave the paper edges slightly torn, it adds character.
