How to Turn Old Sweaters into Adorable Christmas Hoop OrnamentsSometimes, it’s the simplest materials that turn into the most charming decorations.

An embroidery hoop, a sweater scrap, and a few accents transform into ornaments that look like they belong in a boutique holiday shop.

Moreover, these cozy little circles are full of character, plaid ribbons add farmhouse charm, while gold ornaments bring a touch of elegance.

They’re lightweight, easy to make in multiples, and versatile enough to gift, hang on the tree, or even display as wall art through the winter season.

Materials Needed

  • Embroidery hoops (3-5” diameter, depending on preference)
  • Old knit sweater fabric or sweater scraps (pieces cut to 6”×6” squares)
  • Mini faux pine sprigs (3-4” long, 1 per ornament)
  • Small Christmas baubles (1.5” size, gold or silver)
  • Ribbon (plaid, checkered, or satin, 12” per ornament)
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue gun
  • Twine or string for hanging (6” per ornament)

Step-by-step Guide

Step 1: Cut your sweater scrap into a square slightly larger than your embroidery hoop.

You can place it inside the hoop and tighten the screw to secure the fabric.

Step 2: Trim away the excess fabric from the back, leaving about ½ inch around the hoop’s edge. Then fold and glue it neatly so the back looks clean.

Step 3: Hot glue a faux pine sprig to the top of the hoop. Then, glue on a mini bauble to add sparkle and balance.

Step 4: Tie a ribbon into a bow and secure it at the top, overlapping the greenery. Adjust the bow tails so they drape naturally.

Step 5: Attach a piece of twine or string to the hoop’s screw for hanging.

Step 6: Repeat with different sweater textures and ribbon styles for a beautiful mix-and-match set.

Tip:

If you’re making these as gifts, write the year or a family name on the back with fabric paint. It turns them into keepsakes that people will cherish year after year.
