How to Make Christmas Tree Ornaments from Buttons
If you love giving old materials a new story, these button trees are for you.

By simply threading different-sized buttons in descending order, you create miniature evergreens that carry a rustic yet modern charm.

Each ornament is a small nod to sustainability, proof that something as simple as forgotten buttons can become beautiful again.

They’re quick, easy, and endlessly customizable, making them a wonderful project for both kids and adults.

Materials Needed

  • Assorted buttons (10-15 per ornament, in descending sizes 0.5”–1.5” diameter)
  • Brown buttons or beads (0.5” each) for the tree trunk – 1 per ornament
  • Gold or silver star charms (0.5-1” size) – 1 per ornament
  • Sturdy craft wire (20-22 gauge) or strong embroidery thread – 8” length per ornament
  • Scissors (if using thread) or wire cutters (if using wire)
  • Gold or silver hanging cord (8” per ornament)

Step-by-step Guide

Step 1: Sort your buttons into groups of 10–15, arranging them from largest to smallest. This forms the layered tree effect.

Step 2: Begin by threading a brown button or bead at the bottom for the trunk. This will act as the base.

Step 3: Stack the buttons from largest to smallest, threading them through the center holes.

Next, adjust as you go to make sure the tree looks balanced and tapered.

Step 4: Add a gold or silver star charm at the top. This becomes your tree topper.

Step 5: Secure the buttons by twisting the wire tightly at the top or tying a strong knot if using thread.

Step 6: Attach a loop of gold or silver cord through the top for hanging.

Tip:

For a rustic look, use mismatched vintage buttons in earthy tones. For a more polished look, stick to a color family (like all greens or all whites).

You could even spray paint buttons gold or silver for a metallic forest effect.
