How to Give Old Memories a Rustic Bean Frame

How to Give Old Memories a Rustic Bean FrameWith just a plain wooden frame, a mix of beans, and some glue, you can create a textured border full of personality.

Want a sunflower theme? Try yellow split peas with black beans in the center.

Prefer something softer? Use white beans and light lentils for a neutral, Scandinavian look.

Each variation brings out a new character, letting you make a frame that fits the memory it holds.

Materials Needed

  • 1 plain wooden frame (5” × 7” inner opening, 8” × 10” outer)
  • 200-250 yellow split peas (approx. 0.5 cm each)
  • 60-80 small brown beans (1-1.5 cm, for petals)
  • 20-25 tiny white beans or lentils (0.5 cm, for centers)
  • Strong craft glue or hot glue gun
  • Small tweezers (optional)
  • Clear sealant spray (matte or glossy finish)

Step-by-step Guide

Step 1: Start with a clean wooden frame. Then wipe away any dust or oils to ensure the beans stick properly.

Step 2: Plan your pattern. You can fill the entire frame with split peas as a base, then arrange beans into floral clusters or geometric accents.

Step 3: Apply a thin layer of glue over a small section at a time. Place the beans carefully, using tweezers can help with smaller ones.

Step 4: Work your way around the frame, alternating between base fillers (like peas) and decorative motifs (like flowers).

Step 5: Let the glue dry completely, ideally overnight, so the beans set firmly.

Step 6: Spray the entire surface with a clear sealant. This step protects the beans from humidity and adds a professional finish.

Notes:

For a cohesive look, paint the wooden frame background in a color that complements your beans before gluing. It helps cover any gaps and makes the design pop.
