How to Build a Rustic Wooden Snowflake for Outdoor Christmas DecorThis giant wooden snowflake is the perfect DIY if you’re looking for a statement piece that’s both affordable and eye-catching.

Using cut pallet boards, you can create geometric snowflake arms that interlock into a bold star-like design.

It’s sturdy enough to lean against a wall or anchor in the yard, yet stylish enough to stand out among store-bought decorations.

This is a project where rustic charm meets creativity in its purest form.

Materials Needed

  • 6-8 pallet planks (approx. 24”–30” each)
  • Table saw or miter saw
  • Measuring tape and pencil
  • Wood screws (1.5” size)
  • Drill and screwdriver
  • White paint or whitewash stain (½ qt)
  • Sandpaper (120 grit)
  • Faux greenery or pine pick
  • Clear outdoor sealer (optional)

Step-by-step Guide

Step 1: Disassemble the pallet and cut planks into equal lengths (24”-30”). Then use the miter saw to cut arrowhead angles on each end.

Step 2: Arrange six boards into a star shape, evenly spaced at 60-degree angles, forming the base of the snowflake.

Step 3: Attach additional angled pieces onto each arm to create the layered snowflake pattern. Use screws to secure them tightly.

Step 4: Lightly sand the surface to smooth edges but keep some texture for rustic charm.

Step 5: Apply a whitewash or diluted white paint coat. Let the wood grain show through for a frosty look.

Step 6: Add greenery or a pine pick to the snowflake’s center for decoration.

Step 7: If displaying outdoors, spray with a clear sealer to protect from moisture.

Notes:

This design looks fantastic in multiples, try making one large snowflake and a few smaller ones for a cluster effect.

You can also paint them silver or icy blue for a shimmering winter wonderland look.
