Imagine stepping onto your porch and being greeted by giant wooden presents.
These pallet boxes are exactly that: oversized gifts that never need wrapping paper.
Moreover, the bows add a whimsical touch, while the rustic wood grain keeps things grounded and cozy.
They’re big enough to use as accent stands for smaller décor pieces, or you can stack them in a corner for a playful, oversized Christmas display.
Materials Needed
- Pallet wood planks (cut into 18”-24” lengths, approx. 20-25 planks per box)
- 2×2 wood strips (for frame support, 4 pieces per box)
- Wood screws (1.5”-2” size)
- Sandpaper (100–150 grit)
- Outdoor wood paint in red and green (quart each)
- Paintbrushes or foam rollers
- Jigsaw or scroll saw (to cut bow shapes)
- Wood glue (optional)
- Clear matte sealer (if displayed outdoors)
Step-by-step Guide
Step 1: Cut pallet planks into equal lengths for each side of the box. For a 20” tall box, you’ll need about 5 planks per side.
Step 2: Build the frame using 2×2 strips, forming a cube shape. Then secure planks vertically around the frame with screws to complete the box sides.
Step 3: Sand all rough edges until smooth. You want a rustic look, but without splinters.
Step 4: Paint the box in festive colors, alternate red and green for variety. Then allow to dry fully.
Step 5: Trace and cut out oversized bow shapes from pallet wood using a jigsaw. You can sand and paint them in a contrasting color.
Step 6: Attach the wooden bow to the top of the box with screws or strong wood glue.
Step 7: Seal everything with a matte finish if placing outdoors. Finally, arrange the boxes together for a stacked gift tower effect.
Notes:
Try mixing different sizes for visual impact including small boxes at 15”, medium at 20”, and large at 30”.
You can even add battery-operated fairy lights inside for a magical nighttime glow.
