This pallet sled is a surprisingly simple build that makes a big impact on holiday decorating.
By repurposing pallet planks, you can create the classic sled shape with two red-painted runners, a whitewashed plank seat, and rope handles for authenticity.
Add a large holiday bow, sprigs of greenery, or even jingle bells to complete the look.
Ideal for porches, patios, or by the Christmas tree, this sled is both rustic and elegant, offering a handmade touch your guests will admire.
Materials Needed
- 4-5 pallet planks (each approx. 30” long)
- 2 pallet runners or 2×4 boards (36” long for sled rails)
- Wood screws (1.5”)
- Drill and screwdriver
- Sandpaper (120 grit)
- Red and white paint (½ qt each)
- Paintbrushes and rags
- Jute rope (about 3 ft)
- Decorative bow, pine picks, and berries
Step-by-step Guide
Step 1: Cut pallet boards into equal 30” lengths for the sled body. Then sand edges to remove splinters.
Step 2: Lay the boards side by side, then attach two cross supports at the back with screws to hold them together.
Step 3: For the sled runners, cut two 2×4 boards (or pallet runners) to 36” each. Also, paint them red and let dry.
Step 4: Attach the sled body to the runners using screws. You should leave a little overhang at the bottom to give it a realistic look.
Step 5: Drill holes near the top of the runners and thread through thick jute rope for handles. Then knot tightly on each side.
Step 6: Whitewash the sled body with diluted paint for a rustic effect. Wipe off excess to let wood grain show through.
Step 7: Decorate with a plaid bow, pine greenery, or winter berries.
Notes:
For a personalized touch, stencil your family name or “Merry Christmas” across the sled body.
You can also use burlap ribbon instead of plaid if you prefer a farmhouse look.
