A Handmade Embroidered Christmas Tree Keepsake

A single piece of linen transforms into a timeless story when needle and thread come together.

Each stitch adds sparkle, each color tells a tale such as baubles, gifts, and glowing tree lights stitched into place.

This embroidered Christmas tree is not a fleeting present but a lasting chapter in your family’s holiday story.

When placed on a table or framed on a wall, it whispers warmth, patience, and tradition.

Materials Needed

  • Plain linen or cotton cloth (18” × 18” or larger)
  • Embroidery hoop (8”-12”)
  • Embroidery floss in festive colors (greens, reds, golds, blues)
  • Embroidery needles (size 7-9)
  • Scissors
  • Water-soluble fabric pen
  • Iron for finishing

Step-by-step Guide

Step 1: Sketch the outline of a Christmas tree on your fabric using a washable fabric pen. Then add ornaments, stars, and presents to guide your stitching.

Step 2: Place the fabric into the embroidery hoop, pulling it taut so stitching is smooth and even.

Step 3: Begin with the tree branches, using satin stitches or long and short stitches in layered greens to give texture and depth.

Step 4: Stitch ornaments in bright, contrasting colors. French knots add dimension, while chain stitches can mimic garlands wrapping around the tree.

Step 5: Embroider small presents at the base, using bold blocks of color outlined with backstitch for definition.

Step 6: Finish with a star at the top of the tree. Metallic gold or yellow thread works beautifully here.

Step 7: Once complete, carefully wash away pen marks, let dry, and iron the fabric flat. You can frame it or leave it as a decorative linen.

Note:

This gift takes time, but that’s exactly why it feels so special, each stitch is an act of love.

You can even embroider the recipient’s name and year in one corner to turn it into a family heirloom.
